CEH

The CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) by EC-Council is one of the most name-recognized certifications, especially in HR and the corporate/public sector. It’s broad and mostly theoretical (with a separate practical option). Useful as an HR filter, but less valued technically than practical certs.

- a BROAD ethical hacking cert: covers many areas at a conceptual and tool level
- a multiple-choice exam (CEH ANSI); a separate CEH Practical exists (hands-on)
- very NAME-recognized and a frequent requirement in ads (especially corporate/public)
- MIXED technical reputation: broad but less deep than OSCP/PNPT in practice
- hacking phases: recon, scanning, enumeration, exploitation, post, covering tracks
- areas: web, networks, wireless, mobile, cloud, IoT, malware, cryptography (at a general level)
- tools and concepts; maps well to the vocabulary of all offensive security
CEH (ANSI) multiple-choice exam -> theoretical/tool knowledge
CEH Practical hands-on exam (6h) -> demonstrates real practical capability
# if the goal is to demonstrate SKILL, the Practical (or better, OSCP/PNPT) adds more
- when a job/company/administration EXPLICITLY requires it (its main value)
- visibility with non-technical HR who know the name
- as a broad overview of ethical hacking (but without OSCP's practical depth)
- high cost versus alternatives (eJPT/PNPT) with more technical value per euro
- if not required, a PRACTICAL cert (eJPT -> OSCP/PNPT) usually pays off more
- combine with real practice (labs, portfolio) to back up the title
  • The CEH’s value is mostly HR and requirement: useful if you’re explicitly asked for it.
  • To demonstrate practical skill, the CEH Practical or, better, OSCP/PNPT add more.
  • It gives a broad overview of ethical hacking, good as a conceptual map.
  • Weigh the cost: if not required, a practical cert usually yields more per euro.
  • It’s multiple-choice and theory-heavy: study tool names and terminology, not just hands-on skills.
  • Common mistake: expecting an OSCP-style practical — the CEH (ANSI) is a written test; the Practical is separate.
  • Good for HR/public-sector filters; pair it with a practical cert (eJPT/PNPT/OSCP) to prove real skill.
  • Verify whether your target job REQUIRES the CEH (its main reason)
  • EC-Council material + courses; cover the phases and areas
  • Practice tests (multiple-choice exam)
  • Consider the CEH Practical if you want to demonstrate skill
  • Compare cost/value against eJPT/PNPT/OSCP
  • Back it up with real practice (labs, portfolio)
  • Plan the practical cert that truly demonstrates capability
